Upon investigation, I've discovered a possible design flaw that has killed the system. I've got two R1's and neither has had this fan issue like the R2.but with Fortnite devs screwing over 4:3(1280x1024) monitor users with a terrible FOV.I had to make the switch to a 1920x1080 monitor in which the R1 has issues with hitting R1 had no issues with has no issues hitting I do play at around 75% scaling. I've not had this issue on an Alpha R1 with Fortnite and Win 7. Don't nuke your Win 7 drive in case you can't stand Win 10. In fairness.Win 7 isn't officially supported.įor those who might be having this same fan issue with certain games on Win 7, give Win 10 a shot on a new hard drive. I know the A02 firmware was supposed to have stopped this issue.but maybe as they only tested with SteamOS and Win 10.something might still be amiss for those on Win 7.

I'll update this thread if the fans start acting up again. I just didn't figure on that problem being related to Win 7.but it's looking like I was wrong. If the fan issue is solved, I'll gladly stay Win 10 on the R2. The system is snappier with Win 10 than with Win 7. I'm not sure if there is some kind of API issue with Win 7 that is causing the fan problem.but with Win 10.so far no fan issue. I've played a ton of it over the last two days since my nephews are off for the holidays and so far, so good. Much to my surprise.the mysterious fan issue has not happened so far when playing Fortnite. They did give me a free Win 10 digital key when using my Win 7 key.

You can download a tool from MS that will build you a USB Windows 10 stick for the install and input your Win 7 key. I've resisted 10 as I don't like the data collection and updates/content pushed on me without my consent.but with Win 7 EOL, I figured I'd try it. So that brings me to trying out Windows 10 on it. All the other stuff I do with it is retro gaming related and they don't push the GPU or CPU.

The other "new" AAA game I play on it is Doom 2016. It's been the only nagging issue I've had since I've bought the R2.and only with Fortnite. The thing sounds like a hair dryer next to me when it does this. There are no thermal issues as to why the fans are doing this.both the GPU and CPU are thermally stable when this happens.

I've done some logging with some various motherboard tools. Can't hear anything with the machine doing this. It will stay like this for around 3-5 minutes then throttle down to normal. The machine intermittently will spin both fans on the Alpha R2 up to 6000 RPMs for no reason. With Windows 7 support ending just around the corner, I wanted to post up a little update for Windows 7 on the Alpha R2. I'll post up once I try to install the rest of the hardware drivers.

I still need to try the wireless/bluetooth drivers and some other packages(LED control drivers), but am out of time for tonight.

The Intel chipset drivers off Dell's site have worked on Windows 7. The PCIe Ethernet driver works fine from Dell's site. The graphics and audio drivers for the GTX960 are working fine. The GeForce experience software did find the right driver. The installer complains of the OS not being Windows 10 and also throws no compatible hardware found. The drivers on the Dell page will not install. Once over that hurdle, the next was the graphics drivers. That tool will allow you to build a bootable USB drive with the USB 3.0 drivers installed in the Windows 7 setup files.built from the install DVD. The way around it was to use the Gigabyte Windows Install Tool. The next problem revolves around all the USB ports on the R2 are USB 3.0. That causes Windows 7 complain of no CDROM drivers. First, you have to enable a legacy boot mode in the BIOS. The R2 has been more of a challenge to get running on Windows 7. I picked up a new Steam OS R2 i5 off the Dell Outlet for a little over $560.and I'm swapping out the drive for a 2TB with Windows 7.

I'm not sure if this has been covered(I'm guessing it has.since the Alpha R2 is no longer for sale), but I thought I'd post up as I created a thread years ago on the Alpha R1 and Windows 7.
